As a result of this addition, 5.8GHz wireless security cameras can now send a camera signal through a wall.

If you find a 5.8GHz camera and receiver on the market for under $200, chances are it has a 10 milliwatt transmitter in it, which is the lowest power transmitter on the market. In ideal conditions with line of sight, you can stretch it to 300 feet (in theory). In reality though, that is never the case. The signal strength is reduced by interference and walls. If you are looking for a camera that can transmit video up to 500 feet away, you need a camera with at least a 100mw transmitter. For a distance greater than that, let's say 1,000 feet to 2,000 feet, you need a system with a one watt transmitter.

These are very general numbers and can change based on the distance, weather, and availability of a clear line of sight. A good way to increase the odds of success is to put the security camera and receiver antenna as high as possible so that they have a clear line of sight. Before making any purchases however, ensure that you identify your own specific needs for a security system so that you receive the proper protection for your home or business. It's been years in development but this September it looks like 802.11n Wi-Fi will finally become a standard... well, an official standard anyway.

Presently the majority of the wireless hardware you will buy (routers, wireless network cards, printers etc) will use a networking specification called 802.11g which has a maximum speed of 54Mbps. This maximum speed is being increasingly seen as inadequate as applications become more complex and require more bandwidth.

The successor, 802.11n is being ratified to increase both the speed and range of wireless devices however it should be noted that due to the time the IEEE Task Group n have been arguing about the intricacies, equipment manufacturers got bored and decided to run with the draft specification. As a result, the fact that 802.11n is becoming 'official' is unlikely to change a great deal as hardware utilising the new standard has been available for some time now. Although these devices have been produced working on the draft specification, the reality is that there are very few differences between this and the anticipated final 'official' release.

Essentially based on the current 802.11g standard, 802.11n uses some new technology and tweaks to give Wi-Fi more speed and range. The most notable part of this technology is called 'multiple input, multiple output' or MIMO for short. MIMO uses several antennas to transmit multiple data streams simultaneously rather than a single antenna transmitting just one stream of data. This allows more data to be transmitted in the same period of time while also increasing the potential range of the network.

Other technologies include payload optimisation which results in more data being transmitted in each packet and channel bonding which can use two separate non-overlapping channels at the same time to transmit data. The result is all this is achievable data transmission rates of around 100Mbps and double the potential range of 802.11g.

There are no additional improvements as far as security is concerned because they really are not needed. As the standard WPA2 encryption provided by older network hardware have proven to be incredibly secure.

It's worth checking the box of any network equipment you have purchased in the last couple of years as you may find it is already compatible with 802.11n and simply needs setting up correctly. It goes without saying that in order to benefit from the faster speed both the transmitting and receiving devices both have to support 802.11n; A 802.11n router working with a 802.11g laptop will result in slower 802.11g speeds.

Currently devices rated 'N' are more pricey than the older 'G' ones, however not immoderately so; our 'N' rated wireless routers normally sell for around a £10 more than the £25 'G' rated ones. Of course, if you are already happy with the Wi-Fi connectivity of your network and the upgrade will mean replacing perfectly functional hardware. In such a situation serious consideration as to whether your needs warrant the faster hardware would be natural.

First, you should change the system's identification. Security devices come with a default system ID called the Service Set Identifier. Hackers will find it easy to learn the default identifier of each manufacturer, so it is safer for you to change it. Use something unfamiliar. Avoid using your name or other codes that are easily identified.

Second, you should disable the identifier broadcasting. You need not announce that you have wireless connection since this will be enticing to hackers. Check your manual to learn how to disable broadcasting.

Third, it is important to enable encryption. The Wired Equivalent Privacy and the Wi-Fi Protected Access have the ability to encrypt data so that only the intended recipient can read it.

Fourth, you must restrict unnecessary traffic. A lot of wireless routers have their own built-in firewalls. Read the manual of the hardware and find out how to reconfigure your router so that only your approved incoming and outgoing traffic can be allowed.

Fifth, change the default password of the administrator. Since this password can easily be obtained and many people do not go to trouble of changing it, the system falls prey to a lot of hackers. Be sure to change the password to something that cannot easily be guessed.

Lastly, patch and protect your personal computers. You must have a personal firewall and anti-virus software installed on your computers. Be sure to always keep them up to date. Also, keep updates of famous security vulnerabilities.

If you have been following this series of articles describing the technical aspects of wireless network security, you have a pretty good basis of the theory of operation. Now is the time to use what you have learned and begin to set up an ultra-secure wireless network for your home or small office.

When you begin the process of securing your wireless network, you have three basic steps to perform with your wireless access point(s):

• Remove all of the default settings on all your wireless network devices
• Enable security encryption
• Shut the 'network door' to outside, unauthorized users

This discussion is a practical guide to what you need to do. However, it is only a set of generic instructions. There are hundreds if not thousands of different network products on the market. Every manufacturer has its own set of steps and instructions to follow in order to configure their devices for a secure product setup. And inside each vendor, every product may have its own quirks and unique settings. To get the most throughput and security from your network, I suggest you read my steps to familiarize yourself with the overall operation of a wireless network. Then, read the manufacturer's manual for the products you select.

Remove the Defaults

It is truly amazing the number of users that create a wireless network that opens a window into their computer and they leave the default settings. This is akin to installed the best deadbolt money can buy on your front door but fail to even close it!

At a minimum, you will want to change the service set identifier (SSID), the administrator name and the admin password. Do NOT leave these set to factory default. Remember the open front door? You will need to duplicate these changes on all remote devices so I suggest you think about what you want to use for these values before you start and implement them as you go. Or you could leave all set to default until you turn-up and test the network for operation, shut it down and go back and change these values as the last step. It is up to you and it does not matter when you do it, only that you do it!

The next step is to turn on the highest level of security that is common to all you devices. Go for WPA2 if at all possible with WPA an acceptable alternative. If the only level of security available to you is WEP, I suggest strongly you consider upgrading the pieces of wireless hardware preventing you from using WPA2. The cost of changing out these pieces is minor; the vulnerability of a low security network is very high.

Close Your Network 'Door'

Create a closed network. By closed, this means shutting off any broadcast invitations and that means taking a couple more steps with your network.

First, turn off the SSID broadcast. Most access points send out their SSID so that new users can find the network. This is fine during the initial setup but is not needed beyond its first configuration. By turning off this SSID broadcast, other users trying to locate wireless networks will not see yours. This is NOT a substitute for SPA security but simply another step in securing access to your network.

Setup a MAC access layer of security. Most access points allow you to input the MAC address of wireless devices on an 'include' or 'exclude' list. While this is not 100% effective in limiting access, it does add yet another layer of access that a hacker must overcome to gain access to your network.

If you implement each of these areas of defense, you will have a secure wireless network that is extremely safe for its users.
